August dividend update

It’s September already and that means fall is just around the corner. It has been a pretty good summer here in West Coast of Canada. Lots of sunshine and hot weather. We also had a few spectacular thunderstorms. It’s beginning of the month and that means it’s time to tally dividends that we received last month. I particularly like receiving dividends because they are passive income that do not require us working actively. Right now the dividend amount that we receive each month is still quite small but by adding more capital and purchasing shares via DRIP, we should see a healthy increase in the dividend amount month over month, year over year.

We own both Canadian and US stocks in our dividend portfolio. This means that we receive dividends in both Canadian and US. To keep math simple, I’ve decided not to convert US currency into Canadian currency, meaning we’re using a 1 to 1 currency rate. This may not be accurate since $1 US is about $1.09 Canadian right now but this practice keeps life easier. I like easy life. 🙂

In August we received a total of $842.88 in dividend! This was an increase of 47.27% compared to August 2013.

So far in 2014 we’ve received a total of $5545.95 in dividend.

Here are the stocks that we received dividend payment in August

Apple (AAPL)
Pure Industrial REIT (AAR.UN)
Bank of Montreal (BMO.TO)
Canadian Oil Sand (COS.TO)
Chorus Aviation (CHR.B)
Dream Office REIT (D.UN)
Energyplus Corp (ERF.TO)
General Mills (GIS)
KEG Income Trust (KEG.UN)
Kinder Morgan (KMI)
Liquor Store (LIQ)
National Bank (NA.TO)
Omega Healthcare (OMI)
Potash (POT.TO)
Procter & Gamble (PG)
Royal Bank (RY.TO)
AT&T (T)
Vodafone (VOD)
Verizon Wireless (VZ)

The biggest dividend contributor in August was Royal Bank with $154.07.

I’m very excited about dividends that we received in August since it can cover a large percentage of our reoccurring monthly expenses such as apartment strata fee, internet and phone bill, car insurance, hydro bill (what we call electricity bill here in BC), life insurance, and charitable donations.

      Hi DD,

I was surprised about the 40%+ increase. There are a lot of great Canadian dividend paying companies but we’re trying to diversify more toward US or international companies.

Dang, pretty awesome level of dividends here! September is going to be a huge month for you if March was any indication as to the potential payouts you will see. Keep on grinding and in a year or two you’ll cross the $10k dividends received mark in a year.

      Hi W2R,

Thanks for dropping by. We’ll see if we get a huge amount in September. The March amount was higher than usual due to special dividends received.

Wow, that’s a lot of dividends in one month. But that year over year growth rate is even more impressive 🙂 What will you do with your apartment after you move into your house, sell or rent?

Thanks Liquid, we’re very happy about the dividends that we received so far this year.

We’re going to sell the apartment. 🙂

Almost $850 in dividends is damn good and your YTD is super solid as well. Even more impressive is your high savings rate. Keep it up and I’ll be watching your progress closely.

Holy smokes! $840 in dividends?! You are killing it….congrats on the income. You will get to 4 figures in no time at this rate if you keep reinvesting.

Some great stocks in your portfolio..would love to own some of those.

4 figures each month would be nice, maybe next year if we keep up adding money in our dividend portfolio.

    Congrats on a killer month!

That’s extremely impressive. And I see some really great companies up there, quite a few of which I’m a fellow shareholder of. 🙂

Keep up the great work. I imagine you will be over $1,000 this time next year. Looks like you also have a great total YTD. That number is actually about where I think I’ll finish in December, so I’m still behind ya.

    Best wishes!

Wow, that is some seriously impressive dividend income! How much money do you have invested, in total, if I might ask? We’re definitely working toward higher dividend income but aren’t anywhere near you yet.

Great job on $850, Tawcan! That’s a huge amount! YTD dividend income is really starting to ramp up. And you’ve got some awesome companies in your portfolio, very impressive.

Also, I literally couldn’t stop laughing when I read “Protector & Gamble (PG)”. 😀

Over $800 for a month is an incredible milestone. Keep up the good work. Soon you’ll be averaging $1000 a month. That’s my next goal whenever it will come. Look forward to my new Canadian bank dividends coming in the next time around as I added TD, BNS and RY last month. I really like the large Canadian banks. Your YOY increase is also huge. Do you plan to keep aggressively investing each month?

Greatly monthly payout Tawcan! Always great when you can compare it to other monthly expenses and know that one day (if you choose) you can put those dividends towards some of those bills. Also, nice diversification as you are receiving income from quite a few companies.

By the way, I like easy life too. 🙂 Best Wishes. AFFJ

[…] August dividend update Tawcan had a huge month of dividend income. 21 companies in all paid him dividends, which added up to almost $850. That’s pretty solid part-time job income, and yet he didn’t have to clock in and go anywhere for it. Nice! […]

Just found your website. I’ll be a reader, these themes are very interesting for me.
Where I live (Portugal) we don’t have many dividend paying companies and invest in the US or Canada is very expensive.
On the other side, we can make deposits with 3.20% yield (before taxes), which I think you don’t have in Canada or US.

I rather have the stocks but is not to smart for us. Too many fees and comissions with our brokers…

      Hi Trader,

Interesting that Portugal doesn’t have many dividend paying companies. Would you be able to invest in other European dividend paying companies?

3.2% yield for deposits is OK but I’d rather invest in equities.
