Weekend Reading – Canada Day edition

It has been a while that I published a Weekend Reading post. I guess with Canada’s 150th birthday around the corner, it makes sense to do a Weekend Reading post featuring some awesome personal finance articles and some Canadiana contents.

Between work, work travels, family, and enjoying summer, I have not been spending as much time writing the last month. I have been spending more time outside, tending our yard & garden, sitting on our patio relaxing, or discussing with Mrs. T on our RTW travel plans.

For fellow Canadians, how are you going to celebrate this great country’s 150th birthday? For us we will celebrating by spending the whole day down at the beach with other Canadians and having dinner with my family. For American readers, I wish you a happy 4th of July!

I really enjoyed Brent Truitt’s article on financial advice he learned from a thief living next door. Hard to imagine what it’s like to have someone with assault, car theft, and narcotics dealing criminal background living next to you and coming to your place for parties.

Mrs. Our Next Life discussed about the irony of growing up so we can avoid growing up. Is it me or does she write some heavy stuff?

Retire Before Dad is on the FIBER movement. I’m with you!

How do you pronounce the word “process?”

Weird huh? CBC had an article the other day stating many Canadian actors had to lose their “Canadian accents” to get jobs in Hollywood. I had no idea that Americans pronounce “pasta” paw-sta instead of pa-sta.

Joe had a Pop Quiz on How Serious Are You About Early Retirement. We got 9 our of 10, pretty decent score.

Justin, who is touring Europe with his family now, wrote about how their early retirement didn’t go as planned. It ain’t bad when your net worth went up by half a million dollars while retired!

A friend of mine recently traversed the entire Garibaldi Park on skis in one go. That’s 104km and 8700m of elevation gain! He did it alone in 30 hours and 18 minutes! And you think us Canadians are weak? Think again. :p

Sam provided The Average Net Worth For The Above Average Married Couple. It was interesting to compare our net worth with Sam’s numbers. We’re doing well. 🙂

Jeremy gave some insights on Packing for Perpetual Travel. I took some notes to help with our future plans.

Did you know that Canadian McDonald’s in the Maritimes sell McLobster?

Finally did you know these following places are real? I did not make this up!

  • Blow Me Down Provincial Park, N.L.
  • Mayo, Yukon.
  • Dildo, N.L.
  • Crotch Lake, Ont.
  • Vulcan, Alta.
  • Ball’s Falls, Ont.
  • Finger, Man.
  • Climax, Sask.
  • Pekwachnamaykoskwaskwaypinwanik Lake, Man.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Yeah I worked in the US for a while, and people would tease me a bit about my “Canadian” accent.

And wow those are some awesome names. Had to google a few just to make sure you weren’t making that up!

I love all the fun Canuck facts. Say that five time fast!

Pawsta sounds like a Bawston thing. It’s simply pronounced pa-sta most places.

Pasties are two different things though, depending on pronunciation.

Have a great Canada Day weekend!

I didn’t realize Americans pronounce pasta… Pawsta, thought it was a very regional thing too.

Happy Canada Day Tawcan. I had no idea Canada had the largest coastline in the world. Crazy. I’ll help you guys celebrate – drizzling some Canadian Maple Syrup on my baked veggies for dinner 😉

    Tawcan –

Fun share article here. Wild the business and industries that are prevalent in Canada, and yes, I am guilty of Paw-sta, hahaha. Too funny, have a great weekend!
