Month long Danish vacation

Recently Mrs. T, Baby T, and I spent a month in Denmark, visiting Mrs. T’s family and friends during this time. It was great to step away from work for a few weeks and relax. The trip was great for Baby T as it allowed him to bond with his grandparents and great-grandparents. He also added a lot of Danish words in his vocabulary. Pretty good for a 21 month old toddler.

Unlike our previous trips to Denmark, we didn’t spend that much time at the typical Danish tourist attractions. We had many get-together meals, and a lot of hygge.

Here are some highlights of the trip.

We spent a full day in Copenhagen Zoo and saw a lot of different animals. Baby T really enjoyed this outing and loved petting the goats. Last time I went to a zoo I was probably in elementary school so it was quite neat for me to visit a zoo again.

We spent a week in Mrs. T’s grandma’s summer house. The summer house was built in the early 1900’s and had been updated throughout the years. We were cut off from the internet and electronic gadgets for the whole week. We spent a lot of time walking on the beach and letting Baby T run wild. We also tried smoking some fish.

We also went to sønderjysk kaffebord (cake table) at Gram Slot (amazingly I can pronounce these words pretty well 🙂 ). During WWII when Germany occupied Denmark, the Danes were not allowed to have social gathering that involved beer. This was Germany’s way to prevent political discussions. To avoid this restriction, the smart Danes used the cake table event as a way to have social gatherings. This is basically the Danish version of English afternoon tea. There were 21 cakes and we tried them all! We ended up skipping dinner because we were so full. (or did we??)

Wow can’t believe I ate all that and more!

When we were not out eating or playing on the sand, we were busy making elder flower juice, eating more food, and have more hygge.

With all the food that we ate, I was expecting to gain some weight when we came back to Vancouver. I was completely shocked to find out that I didn’t gain any weight. It’s probably because of all the running around after Baby T during this trip.

It was amazing to be able to spend a month in Denmark. I hope you enjoyed these pictures.

  2. Looks amazing!! Visiting friends, family when traveling to really experience and embrace the culture is the best way to enjoy traveling. I’m glad you guys have a whole month off. It’s amazing that your workplace would let you go for that long, it sounds like it’s a great place to work. 🙂

Babies adopt language so fast. Their brain are crystal clear so they can take stuff that us adults no longer can! Do share some more amazing picture. I wish I can visit Danmark somedays. It sounds like it’s a great place to visit.

Lovely pictures. As a fellow dane, living only 50 miles away from Gram Slot, and having tried that coffee table yet – I most certainly have to in the near future. Thanks for sharing.

    • Hi Mads,

You’ll have to check out Gram Slot and try the coffee table. We had to drive for about an hour to get to Gram Slot and it was well worth the drive.

    • Hi DivHut,

Having different type of food while traveling is one of the reasons why I love traveling. Elder flower juice taste awesome, you can actually get some from Ikea.

    • Hi FF,

I was lucky to have that much vacation time available to take. It was interesting seeing the number of unread emails in my work inbox when I came back.

  9. Tawcan,

Wow, the pictures are amazing and it looks like you visited a beautiful place. It is great to hear that you took some time away from the grid, relaxed, and made the most out of your vacation time with your immediate and extended famil. Sometimes it is nice to just spend some time with nature without all of the modern day conveniences.

Welcome back from your trip. I am sure you miss visiting there every day haha
